Name that "Storm" During the month of May, a list of hurricane names for the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific regions are provided to the general public. The list consist of male and female names, yet when we take a close look, notice that the Atlantic listing tends to eliminate the alphabets Q,U,X,Y and Z due to the lack of available names. The Eastern Pacific accommodates these alphabets and rotate the given names every other season. When a hurricane presents itself and causes mass destruction to a given locality, the name is eliminated and will not be used for future listing. Distinguishing storms by name is quite necessary due to multiple activity rotating at sea. Back in the olden days, names were a bit more subtle than those of the 21st century as we know them and their interpretation will vary based on its' origin ranging from Biblical times, the English, Spanish, Latin, Greek and Hebrew meaning. How often do we think about preparing for bad weather in advance? Keeping that first aid kit in a special place, making sure documents are at hand and keeping the weather alert radio programmed for localized storm messages. The list of storms given to us will present activity throughout the region at a rapid pace. But will they live up to its' reputation. Let's take a look at the top 5 that have moved through the area as a hurricane or downgraded to a tropical storm. Atlantic: Ana - Oh gracious one Bill - The conquerer/warrior Claudette - The disabled one Danny - Will only be judged by one, "God" Erika - Oh honorable ruler of all
Eastern Pacific: Andres - A courageous sole/warrior Blanca - Pure and innocent Carlos - Yet he be strong and mighty Dolores - Constantly troubled with grief Enrique - Rules the home with dignity Did you consider these storms as their names presented them? Were they wild, furious, mild or meek? Names that are given to us as individuals at birth can be viewed in the same manner and will carry true meaning that will define our reputation.
